Well, there you have it, the third version of the story.
The paddle steamer Sirius was the first ship to cross the Atlantic by steam power alone. She achieved the feat in 18 days, arriving in New York on 22 April 1838.

Interesting account of the steamship Savannah, the first of her kind to cross the Atlantic.
May 22, 1819, the Savannah “put to sea with steam and sails” on the historic trip that would take her to England, Sweden and Russia with stops in Norway and Denmark before returning home.
